Lyckan är ingen plats utan en riktning

Some words have a little difference that mark if one talks about a place or a direction. Var means where as a certain place, while vart means a direction.

Var finns ditt hus? Vart ska vi åka?

Hemma means simply a home, while hem means that the sentence describes a movement.

Jag bor hemma. Vi åker hem.

Same applies for här, där that mean here and there, as a place. Hit and dit show again the direction.

Här finns ett skog. Vi gick dit.

Same principle applies for Inne, Ute, Uppe, Nere, Borta that are places or positions. In, ut, upp, ner, bort mark the action.
